A few kilometres southwest of Portland is Cape Nelson and its state park. Looking west across the bay you can see Cape Bridgewater, spectacular coastal views and occasional whale sightings.
The park is accessed via walking tracks which highlight the scenery as well as sea birds and occasional kangaroos, echidnas, snakes and lizards found there.
Within the park is the Cape Nelson Lighthouse, built of blue stone and completed in 1884. The lighthouse is open for tours (conducted daily at 11am and 2pm) and the keepers cottages are available as hired accommodation.
