An insight into the Victorian gold rush
This heritage listed national park, the Castlemaine Diggings Heritage Park, provides a keen insight into the Victorian gold rush from the early 1850’s as an important and significant event in Australian history.
The diggings are less than half and hour by car and due south of the current city of Castlemaine.
By 1852, one year after the beginning of the Victorian gold rush, the diggings population had skyrocketed to between 40,000 and 60,000.
Mining relics and beautiful camping spots
The park includes many mining relics from the period including the remains of houses, mining equipment and actual mining sites.
In addition to exploring the park there are two beautiful river camping locations at Warburton Bridge and Vaughn Springs.
