Located in the south eastern corner of New South Wales, the Snowy Mountains contains the five highest peaks in Australia including the highest, Mount Kosciusko at 2,228 meters. The range is a part of the Australian Alps and the continuation of the Great Dividing Range as it leaves Victoria and enters New South Wales to the north.
The range includes some of Australia’s most popular ski resorts and is fortunate to receive good natural snow falls during winter months. Much of the Snowy Mountains are included and preserved within the astonishingly beautiful Kosciuszko National Park.
The mountains are also the site of Australia’s largest engineering project in the Snowy Mountain Scheme. The irrigation and hydroelectric project harnesses both the Snowy River and several other rivers in the region as a source of electrical power for the south eastern states.
