The capital of the state of New South Wales, Sydney is built around the magnificent estuary of the Parramatta River and extends to the Blue Mountains in the west, north to the Hawkesbury River and south to the area of the Royal National Park.
The area has a population of around 5 million and has the majority of the New South Wales population of 7.8 million living there.
The Greater Sydney area was the first point of European contact, with the explorer James Cook landing there in 1770 and then a penal colony established in 1788.
The area is dominated by the waterways, harbours and bays that are found in abundance.
