In 1813 the Blue Mountains barrier to the rest of the continent were first successful crossed by European explorers from the Sydney colony. What lay before them were the rich volcanic soils of the western plains and rapidly settlements were established, with the first being Bathurst.
Within a few years the 1851 gold rush meant that thousands went to the area to try their luck in finding their fortune. The gold rush didn’t last, but the Central West had already established itself as one of the richest agricultural areas in the country and so it remains, including now being one of Australia’s major wine production regions.
