Avoca Beach

  • by

To the north of Gosford, sitting between its ocean beach and the small inland lake is the resort township of Avoca Beach.  The resort is one of the more popular central coast retirement and holiday destinations.

The township has some 4,500 people, being both popular as a residential area as well as a holiday resort.  In addition to the attractions of the protected ocean beach, rock pool swimming area and inland lake, the township has a frequently used caravan park and holiday accommodation.

In 1830, a former Irish army officer, John Moore sailed from Sydney and set up his home here, naming it after the Avoca River in Ireland.

Avoca Lake - panoramio

The Avoca Lake is a salt water lagoon which is popular for swimming and water sports including kayaking. The tidal nature of the lake provides a opportunity for hardy surfers to surf its waters as the exit to the ocean.
